PRESS RELEASE:

Jazz Vocalist Misha Steinhauer’s Fearlessly Explores Love’s Many Phases In Her New Release, Dreaming With Eyes Wide Awake
With her 7th CD, singer Misha Steinhauer displays her versatile vocal style
and gift for story-telling in 11 original compositions

Jazz song-stylist Misha Steinhauer’s brand-new CD, Dreaming With Eyes Wide Awake, hits the mark on several deeply enjoyable levels, as her tuneful, satisfying melodies meld with the skillful story-telling she showcases in her lyrics. Ranging from tender ballads to up-tempo cookers, this collection highlights her nimble voice as a musical instrument itself, as well as reveals Misha’s chops as a composer, lyricist, and arranger.

The German-born Steinhauer has been based in New York since 2014, but her musical roots stretch back a lifetime: She lifted her voice in song even before she learned to walk, and demonstrated a natural ability to improvise before she ever heard of the word or the concept. By the time she hit her mid-teens, Misha had delved into piano studies, sang in church and school choirs, and co-founded her first band. When she reached college age, the music world almost lost Steinhauer to the world of business and HR, but before long she switched her focus to jazz singing, which became her lifelong passion.

Studying and gigging throughout Europe—including more than a decade based in Moscow—Steinhauer proved herself an enormously versatile singer, composer, arranger, and teacher. Misha made the move to the U.S. to attend Queens College, where she earned her master’s degree in jazz studies in 2015.
Throughout her career, the vocalist has gained recognition for her original songs, as well as for applying her unique point of view to her arrangements of jazz standards and more. In addition to her beloved jazz, her broad repertoire has encompassed standards, pop hits, traditional hymns, and 1930s-vintage German tunes. Steinhauer has demonstrated a knack for taking the familiar and making it new; in her rediscovery and reimagining, well-worn material and subjects take on a new life and image, thanks to her fertile musical and lyrical imagination.

This time around, listeners are treated to an entire collection of Misha’s originals. The 11 songs on Dreaming With Eyes Wide Awake trace the cycle of romantic love from start to finish to rebirth, fearlessly facing what went wrong and what lies ahead with sophistication, wit, insight, and soul. Album highlights include:

“Day and Night,” in which she embraces the song with supple ease, clearly enjoying herself and showing real empathy with the band.
“Here Comes Autumn Again,” a beautiful ballad with a luscious feel; the poetic words—delivered with rich intonation--have a nostalgic vibe. On this tune, Hendrik Meurkens shows why he’s one of the most highly regarded harmonica players in the world today.

“Yet Another Love Song” employs interesting bittersweet imagery in describing the vagaries of love in the 21st century.
“Where Do I Belong,” caressing and heartfelt, this tune showcases the full range of Steinhauer’s voice, from a husky murmur to Minnie Ripperton heights.
“Hello, How Are You Doing” is a little bit country-inflected, a little bit tough. It also includes some cool, effortless scatting, and offers everyone in the band a chance to shine.
Joining Misha Steinhauer on Dreaming With Eyes Wide Awake are a globally acclaimed quartet of players:

Hendrik Meurkens (harmonica and vibes). Feted from the U.S. to Europe to Brazil, this award-winning musician has shared stages with several generations of giants in jazz and other genres, among them Astrud Gilberto, Ivan Lins, Paquito D’Rivera, Herbie Mann, Monty Alexander, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Toninho Horta, Ray Brown and many more. Hendrik is among the top-strata of players on both harmonica and vibes, cherished for both his technique and his feeling.

Glauco Lima (piano). A veteran at the keyboards with more than two decades of experience under his belt, besides being well-known as a band leader, composer, arranger and producer in his own right, Glauco is an in-demand sideman, who has appeared with John Patitucci, Todd Coolman, Rogerio Boccato, and many others.
Michal Jaros (bass). Michal is a regular on the jazz club and festival scene in the U.S. and around the world, plus, he’s equally at home in classical and pop settings. He’s performed and recorded with top-flight jazz musicians including Pulitzer Prize nominee Wadada Leo Smith, Grammy Award winner Terence Blanchard, Ronnie Cuber, Judy Bady and more.
Samuel Martinelle (drums). After establishing his reputation in Brazil, Samuel moved to New York in 2014 to study with Antonio Hart, Michael Mossman, Dennis Mackrel and others. Samuel has toured internationally, and recently made his Carnegie Hall debut.

Throughout this powerful and appealing new recording, the multi-talented Misha Steinhauer shows herself to be a musical and lyrical force to be reckoned with.
